Something unusual happened when I landed in Miami (MIA) yesterday and I’m curious if anyone has seen this before.
I was traveling with two coworkers (all of us are U.S. citizens). Before we reached passport control there were about 5–6 CBP officers checking people. One of them stopped us and asked for our passports.
He asked the normal questions about where we were coming from. Then he focused on me and asked if I speak Arabic, which I do. After that he asked me a few more questions in Arabic.
Then he took a photo of my passport with his phone and let us go.
Later when I went through the automated passport control gate, it didn’t let me through and I had to speak to another officer. That officer just asked where I was coming from and then let me through.
Just wondering if anyone knows why an officer would take a photo of a passport like that, especially with a phone. Is that normal procedure?
