Just got off DL0334 DTW to LAS and it was pure chaos. People boarding with two bags plus a backpack, and the “carry ons” are basically full size checked suitcases. Overheads jammed instantly, bags not fitting, people blocking aisles trying to force them in.
What really blew my mind was FAs handing out big plastic bags so people could open their carry ons mid plane, pull stuff out, then stash both the suitcase and the extra bag in the overhead… along with their backpack. Total madness.
One FA asked people to put coats or backpacks under their seats. One guy got snippy about being tall. She said he could say no. He did. Then she grabbed two more bags to move under seats and they were both his. He had three bags up there. After that, everyone else with tiny overhead bags started refusing too.
Eventually they had to unload and gate check a bunch of bags while everyone shifted around like cattle.
I don’t blame the crew, but something has to give. Either enforce the rules at boarding or stop pretending carry on limits exist. This free for all is miserable for everyone.
