My partner and I will be flying from Toronto to London in May 2027 for a Norwegian Fjords cruise. We booked the cruise well in advance because availability was limited and planned to use a transfer from Amex Membership Rewards points to book Virgin Atlantic Premium Economy seats.
Now that the flights are getting closer to becoming available for booking, I have noticed that the taxes and fees on award tickets seem much higher than they were previously.
For late April dates, I am seeing charges of about CAD 452 per person one way in Premium Economy and CAD 1,010 in Upper Class. I expected Upper Class fees to be higher, but these amounts seem significantly above what I remember. I found a screenshot from June 2025 showing fees of only CAD 299 for Premium Economy and CAD 565 for Upper Class.
Have Virgin Atlantic's carrier-imposed surcharges increased recently, or is there another reason for the jump in fees? An increase of roughly CAD 150 in Premium Economy and nearly CAD 500 in Upper Class seems substantial.
Also, if these surcharges were to decrease before the flight date, would passengers receive any refund of the difference, or are the fees locked in once the ticket is issued?
