I’ve stayed in plenty of up north cabins in Wisconsin, but nothing prepared me for Canoe Bay. Tucked away on 300 acres with its own 50-acre spring-fed lake, it’s the state’s only Relais & Châteaux property and it feels like stepping into a Frank Lloyd Wright dream. My cottage had two decks, fireplaces, and a soaking tub, all surrounded by quiet forest. The mornings started with breakfast in a hand-delivered wooden crate, and dinner was a three-course feast overlooking the lake.
Days here can be as active or lazy as you want paddling on Lake Wahdoon, wandering the organic garden, or curling up in the two-story library. There’s no spa, but in-room treatments and pure serenity make up for it. It’s the kind of place you come to unplug, eat ridiculously well best grilled cheese ever, and just breathe. Who’s been?
