Canoe Bay – Wisconsin’s Hidden Luxury Escape on a Private Lake

Just got back from a stay at Canoe Bay in northwest Wisconsin, and I think I’ve found my new favorite Midwestern escape. This isn’t your average up north cabin it’s the state’s only Relais & Châteaux resort, tucked away on a private 50-acre lake with architecture inspired by Frank Lloyd Wright. My Treetop House had vaulted ceilings, stone fireplaces, and a soaking tub perfect for unwinding after a paddle on Lake Wahdoon. There’s no spa, but in-room treatments, serene gardens, and a 24/7 library more than make up for it.

The food? Incredible. Breakfast arrives in a wooden crate, lunch can be enjoyed lakeside, and dinner is a three-course, wine-paired masterpiece. I’m still dreaming about the grilled-cheese with Wisconsin artisan cheese and tomato soup. Whether you want to kayak, birdwatch, or just curl up with a book, this place is all about slowing down and soaking in the peace.
