Cancel or reschedule a United business class ticket I can’t use. What’s smarter?

I’ve got a United business class ticket to Australia that I can’t make anymore. Bought it 11/1/2025, flying 1/11/2026 and returning 1/27/2026. Not a cheap ticket, so I want to handle this the right way.

From what I understand, I’ve got two options:

Cancel the ticket and get future flight credits. Those credits would expire one year from the original ticket issue date, so 11/1/2026. And the travel would need to be completed by then, not just booked. Is that right?

Change the flight to a future date (and possibly different cities), even if I don’t really know where or when yet. My understanding is that as long as I keep changing instead of canceling, the ticket doesn’t “turn into” an FFC and I can keep adjusting it beyond that one-year window. Also no change fees, just fare differences.

If that’s correct, option 2 seems way more flexible since it avoids the hard expiration date that comes with canceling.

Am I understanding this correctly? Any gotchas I should be aware of, or other strategies I should consider before I touch the booking?
