I’m a 23-year-old solo female traveler from Canada with a trip planned to Greece from May 29 to June 10. I’ve been very excited about this trip, as Greece has been on my bucket list for a long time.
Recently, coworkers mentioned a travel health warning reported by various news sources, noting that Leishmaniasis—a disease transmitted by sandflies—has been highlighted in updated advisories for Greece, Italy, Spain, and China.
The guidance suggests precautions such as avoiding sandfly bites, using air-conditioned rooms or treated bed nets, and avoiding areas near animal burrows, as sandflies are most active from sunset to sunrise.
I’m wondering whether this is something to be genuinely concerned about or if this is a long-standing issue that has simply been more recently emphasized in travel advisories. I’ve seen that it’s not a new disease in the region, so I’m unsure what has changed or whether there has been an increase in cases.
I do have some health-related anxiety, so I’m trying not to overreact or cancel my trip unnecessarily.
