I am flying from Europe to a smaller U.S. city via Newark (EWR) and have an 8 hour layover there.
I would really like to leave the airport for a few hours to walk around, grab food, and stretch my legs instead of sitting in the terminal the whole time. I have done similar long layovers internationally before without any issues.
What I want to avoid is checking a bag from Europe because I know I would then need to collect it at EWR, wait at baggage claim, and re-check it after customs, which feels like a waste of time during the layover.
I thought about using luggage storage services like LuggageHero, but that also means spending extra time finding the storage location and returning later to retrieve the bag.
So I was wondering if this is possible instead:
Fly from Europe to EWR with only a carry-on
Clear immigration and customs using MPC
Check that carry-on bag at EWR for the domestic leg after customs
Leave the airport and enjoy the layover
Come back later for the final flight
Basically, can you check a bag midway through an itinerary even if it was not checked on the original international flight segment?
If relevant, the flights are on United.
