I recently observed an incident on the Northeast Corridor involving a passenger in the Quiet Car who repeatedly spoke on the phone despite being asked several times by the conductor to stop or move to another car.
The behavior continued, and the conductor eventually re-scanned the passenger’s ticket. At that point, the passenger appeared uncomfortable and tried to avoid further escalation. The conductor then stated that they would be filing a report regarding the incident.
Afterward, the passenger became apologetic and mentioned something about traveling under their mother’s account and not wanting any consequences.
This made me wonder: do Amtrak conductors actually have the authority to formally document or report passengers for refusing to follow Quiet Car rules or other onboard instructions? If so, what kind of consequences can result from that?
I was surprised (positively) to see such strict enforcement of Quiet Car policies.
