Bumped from international first to economy because of deadheading pilots. Feeling pretty awful about it.

I paid for international first class from Costa Rica to Seattle, about an 8 hour flight. It was a big deal for me. First trip in years after a serious accident, saved up, wanted to treat myself and celebrate finally being healthy again.

Checked in fine, checked my bag fine, then during boarding my name gets called. Gate agent tells me two pilots are deadheading and first is oversold, so I’m getting pushed back to regular economy on a completely full flight. Was told my status was low, so I was the one moved.

Once onboard it just kept getting worse. Asked if my preselected breakfast was still available since I hadn’t eaten. Nope. Asked to buy a Mediterranean snack pack. None available and I didn’t preorder. Only option was a ham box, which I can’t eat since I’m vegetarian. So I’m sitting on an 8 hour flight basically starving, offered one biscoff cookie and that’s it.

I know it’s not the fault of the gate agents or flight attendants, and I stayed polite the whole time. But it really stings. I paid for first, was excited about the meal and experience, and instead I’m in economy feeling like I didn’t matter.

I’ve been loyal to Alaska for years, but this honestly makes me question why I’d ever pay for first again.
