I had a very concerning experience on an American Airlines flight and wanted to see if anyone has dealt with something similar.
My sister and I were seated in middle seats across the aisle from each other. When I tried to fasten my seatbelt, the buckle would not stay latched. It would briefly connect and then immediately pop back out. A passenger seated next to me even tried helping, but neither of us could get it to work.
A flight attendant was called over, and before I could fully explain the situation, I was met with a sarcastic response along the lines of asking whether I wanted to file a complaint or get a new airplane. Eventually another flight attendant arrived, and they offered a seatbelt extender. Unfortunately, the extender did not solve the issue because it could not be tightened properly and left significant slack.
At the same time, my sister mentioned that her seatbelt was experiencing the same problem, but little attention was given to her situation.
Later, one of the flight attendants returned and suggested that the issue was related to the seat configuration and partition in that row. This explanation only left me more confused, as it seemed to imply that the seatbelts in those seats were known to be problematic.
What concerns me most is not only the apparent seatbelt issue itself but also the way it was handled. A non-functioning seatbelt seems like a serious safety concern, yet the response felt dismissive and unprofessional.
I plan to file a complaint with American Airlines, but I am curious whether anyone else has experienced something similar and whether there are additional steps I should take beyond submitting feedback to the airline.
