My return flight with British Airways from Cancun was delayed by approximately seven hours, and the airline has refused compensation, stating that air traffic restrictions related to a SpaceX rocket launch affected operations at the destination airport.
What I am struggling to understand is whether this should really count as an unforeseeable event. Rocket launches are usually scheduled well in advance and are planned weeks or even months beforehand, so it seems like this would be something airlines could reasonably anticipate and account for in their scheduling.
Do I have grounds to challenge or escalate the decision, and has anyone dealt with a similar compensation denial before?
