Booked a place on Booking.com that literally didn’t exist, now they won’t refund

Booked a one night stay in France in early January through Booking.com. Paid through Booking, money was taken, all normal.


When we arrived, we couldn’t reach the host at all. After waiting about 30 minutes, someone finally opened the door and told us the business we booked no longer exists at that address and that we’re not the first people this has happened to. There is a different business there now with a similar name, but they don’t accept dogs, so we had to stay somewhere else entirely.


I assumed this would be an easy fix with Booking. It hasn’t been. I first contacted them a few days later since we were on a road trip. They said because I contacted them after checkout and they couldn’t reach the property, they couldn’t help.


Tried again today and now they’re telling me the accommodation claims we stayed there. No idea how they’re “proving” that.


At this point it feels like I’m just being ignored. Has anyone dealt with something like this before? Any tips on how to escalate or actually get Booking to take this seriously?
