A Boeing 787 experienced an unusual ground incident at Mataveri Airport on Easter Island when one of its passenger doors detached from the fuselage while the aircraft was parked.
No passengers were onboard at the time, and there were no injuries reported. The aircraft had reportedly been preparing for its next scheduled flight when the issue occurred.
Because the airport is extremely remote, located thousands of kilometers from major maintenance hubs, the situation has created logistical challenges for repairs. Replacement parts and specialist engineers for the widebody aircraft are not readily available locally and must be flown in.
Investigators and engineers are currently trying to determine what caused the failure. Possible areas of review include the door’s hinge mechanism, latch system, ground handling procedures, and any prior maintenance work.
The incident is particularly notable because aircraft doors are designed with multiple safety systems to prevent accidental detachment. A full separation of a door on the ground is considered rare and will likely involve a detailed investigation by the operator, Boeing, and aviation authorities.
