After years of frequent business travel, I’ve been thinking about a different approach to airplane boarding. Instead of traditional methods like back-to-front or window-to-aisle, what if there was an additional step between priority boarding and general boarding?
The idea is to allow passengers who only have a personal item, and no carry-on luggage, to board first. Since they do not need overhead bin space, they could quickly take their seats without slowing down the process. Once a portion of the cabin is already seated, passengers with carry-ons could board afterward without as much congestion or competition for bin space.
It seems like allowing even a quarter of passengers to settle in before overhead bins become a factor could improve overall boarding efficiency. I am curious if anyone has seen this method used or has thoughts on whether it would actually speed things up.
