When traveling, I usually prefer to pay for most things using my credit card. On a recent trip to Spain, I noticed that payment terminals often gave me the option to pay either in euros or in my home currency (CAD), which initially seemed convenient.
However, I later realized that choosing to pay in my home currency came with an extra charge. After checking the details, I found that an additional fee of around 4% had been applied to those transactions.
It’s not a huge loss, but it’s definitely something to watch out for. If you’re given the option, it’s usually better to pay in the local currency to avoid these extra charges.
