Best ways to stay connected abroad: SIMs, Google Fi, T-Mobile and more

I've tried a few of these approaches over the years, and it really does depend on the trip. Google Fi was a lifesaver in Japan. Seamless and easy but the call charges were no joke. T-Mobile’s free data is nice for emails and maps, but at 256Kbps you're not streaming anything. eSIMs like Airalo are clutch if your phone supports it, and I actually prefer them now over tracking down a SIM at a kiosk after a red-eye.

Anyone have a go-to combo that actually balances speed and cost without the hassle?
