I’ve booked my daughter on a long-haul itinerary from Atlanta to Darwin via LAX and Sydney, all on a single American Airlines ticket.
She is finishing college and will be traveling with:
2 checked bags (one extra paid)
1 duffle bag she plans to use as carry-on for competition gear
The plan is:
ATL → LAX → SYD → DRW
She has a 12-hour layover in Sydney, where she plans to collect her checked bags, leave them with family, and return later with only the duffle bag.
The issue is the Sydney → Darwin leg is operated by Jetstar, and I remember Jetstar having stricter carry-on rules compared to American Airlines.
My questions are:
Does the carry-on allowance from American Airlines still apply on the Jetstar-operated segment when booked through AA?
If the duffle bag exceeds Jetstar’s carry-on limits, will she be forced to check it again in Sydney?
Is it possible to re-tag or re-check baggage in Sydney easily on the same ticket?
I also noticed the ticket mentions partner airline baggage policies may differ, so I am unsure what rules actually apply in practice.
Any clarification from people who have done AA + Jetstar mixed itineraries would be really helpful.
