Just got back from Venice and ran into something strange with the vaporetto system.
I bought two 3 day passes through the AVM app (45€ each) since single rides are about 10€ for 75 minutes. Thought I was saving a lot. Later I checked my bank statement and saw I was also being charged for individual rides.
Looks like when you tap your phone at the reader it can also trigger your default wallet card through NFC and charge you again on top of the pass.
Customer service refunded the extra charges pretty quickly, which was good. But honestly the safer option might just be getting the paper ticket and keeping your phone in your pocket.
