I booked a long haul return as two separate one way bookings, which is pretty standard for popular routes. Each leg was 4x Club World.
When I booked the outbound, I had one Companion Voucher available. By the time I booked the inbound, I’d earned another one for the new year, so I used a second Companion Voucher on that leg. In total, I paid £998 and 330,000 Avios for each direction.
Yesterday I called BA to do the usual merge into a single booking and get the excess Avios refunded. My understanding was that this would effectively leave me with 2 seats booked with Avios and 2 using Companion Vouchers.
The agent told me this isn’t possible. He said that if you want to combine the bookings and get Avios back, all valid Companion Vouchers have to be applied to the first leg. He also mentioned this was the first time he’d personally seen this situation, which made me want to sanity check it here.
A couple of questions for anyone who’s done something similar:
Is this correct? Has anyone successfully merged bookings when using two Companion Vouchers across outbound and return?
Is it possible to cancel the Companion Voucher on the second leg and then merge the bookings, at least to recover one voucher?
If cancelling and rebooking is the only option, does anyone know how predictable it is for Avios seats to reappear after cancellation?
