My partner and I booked MAD to SJU in business on Iberia using Avios and a BA companion voucher for December. We booked it starting in Madrid because it wouldn’t show as a through booking from London, even though there were Avios seats on LHR to MAD in both economy and business.
We called BA and they were able to price LHR to MAD in economy plus MAD to SJU in business, but the cost jumped to 114k Avios and over £1,000 cash. That felt wild compared to booking just MAD to SJU, which was 99k Avios and about £400. The standalone LHR to MAD Avios flight was something like 27k Avios and £2, so I don’t get why adding it blows up the cash portion so much.
Now we still need to sort the London to Madrid connection, but we’d really like to avoid arriving 5 or 6 hours early just to deal with bags, immigration, and re check in. Same issue on the return with an overnight flight.
Is there any way to book the LHR to MAD leg separately and then have BA or Iberia link the bookings so bags can be checked through and we can use the connections route in Madrid? Or is that basically not a thing with separate Avios bookings?
Any insight appreciated.
