Arrived at 5am in KL with a confirmed Booking.com reservation… hotel had no room

I had a confirmed Booking.com reservation in Kuala Lumpur for Dec 20–22. Two days before arrival, I messaged the hotel through Booking.com to let them know I’d arrive around 5am after an overnight flight. Never got a response.

When I arrived at 5am, the hotel told me they had no room and couldn’t honor the booking. No warning, no call, no email. First time in KL, exhausted, and suddenly stranded outside with luggage.

Tried Booking.com’s “24/7 support” and got nowhere. In-app chat said they’d reply within 24 hours, phone support had long waits. I eventually found another hotel on my own just to get a bed, but it was cheaper and worse than what I booked.

Now Booking.com is basically saying since the original booking was pay-at-property and the replacement hotel cost less, there’s nothing to compensate beyond an apology. No acknowledgement of being left without accommodation at 5am in a foreign city.

Has anyone dealt with a confirmed booking not being honored on arrival? Did you manage to get Booking.com to escalate or offer meaningful compensation, or is this just a dead end?
