I’ve been in Japan for the past three weeks during cherry blossom season, and I expected heavy crowds. However, I’ve noticed that many places feel less crowded than anticipated. Even well-known tourist spots in Kyoto seemed relatively manageable.
For example, in Kurashiki (often referred to as the “Venice of Japan”), I mainly saw a small number of foreign tourists and mostly domestic day visitors. Similarly, while cycling the Shimanami Kaido route from Onomichi to Imabari, there was plenty of space and not many travelers around.
This made me wonder whether overall tourist numbers are lower this year, possibly due to factors like reduced travel from certain countries, global economic conditions, or geopolitical situations, or if my experience is just coincidental and not representative of the broader trend.
