I’ve seen cases where Northeast Regional trains catch up to each other or even assist a disabled train, but this situation with the California Zephyr is unusual.
Train 5 (10) is currently running over 22 hours late, while the following service, train 5 (11), is only about 3 hours behind it, meaning it may end up catching the earlier train.
The situation is further complicated by planned track closures between Denver and Grand Junction for maintenance. Because of this, passengers on trains 5 (11) and 6 (11) are expected to be bused between those points to connect with different train sets.
I am wondering how Amtrak will handle passengers from the severely delayed 5 (10) service and whether they will be re-routed or combined with other services during the disruption.
