American ending miles on basic economy, does this really affect most people?

Saw the news that American won’t earn miles on basic economy anymore. If you’re booking basic, you’re probably just chasing the cheapest fare anyway, right?

I’m struggling to see why this is a huge deal for loyalty folks. Anyone who actually cares about miles or status usually avoids basic already. Feels more like a headline than something that changes how most people fly.
