Amazing places that don’t look impressive on Instagram

Lately I’ve been thinking about how much travel content is just the same few spots shot from slightly different angles. Santorini sunsets, Bali rice terraces, that infinity pool in Singapore. And I realized I have zero desire to travel somewhere just because it photographs well.

I’m way more interested in places that are incredible to experience but don’t really stop anyone from scrolling.

For me, one big one was hiking in Slovakia’s High Tatras. Stunning mountains, clear lakes, amazing trails. But when I showed photos later people were like “oh, nice mountains.” You can’t capture the silence, the smell of the air, or how good it feels to reach a summit. In pictures it’s just… mountains. In real life it was one of my favorite trips ever.

Same with wandering normal neighborhoods in Lisbon. Not the famous viewpoints, just residential streets with laundry hanging out windows and old guys playing cards at cafés. I barely took photos because there wasn’t much to shoot, but I loved it way more than a lot of “must see” sights.

Food markets are another one. Real local markets where people buy groceries, not curated food halls. They’re loud, messy, and sometimes overwhelming, but they tell you so much about a place. Not very photogenic though.

Curious what other people’s versions of this are. Places that were amazing in person but kind of flat in photos, or trips where you forgot to document everything because you were too busy actually being there.

Feels like a lot of travel planning is starting to revolve around what looks good online instead of what actually sticks with you, and I’m trying to push back on that.
