This happened on March 12 at the Bangkok Sky Buffet on the 76th floor of the Baiyoke Hotel. I was eating alone a few hours before my connecting flight to Taipei. I had my Pacsafe backpack on the chair next to me and briefly turned away to take some photos of the view.
When I looked back, my bag was gone.
I alerted the staff but they didn’t seem very concerned. I searched around the buffet several times and eventually found my backpack on the 77th floor sitting unattended in a corner.
When I picked it up, an older woman started protesting in Mandarin and tried to grab the bag from me. She followed me back down to the buffet floor, and soon she, her tour group, and some staff surrounded me. She claimed she had mistaken my bag for hers.
That seemed unlikely because her bag looked completely different and her group wasn’t even seated near me.
I didn’t have time to deal with it further since I had a flight to catch, but it was definitely a stressful experience. I also realize now it was a mistake to leave my bag with my passport and cash unattended, even for a moment.
