Sharing this in case it helps someone else. I had my son buy two Disneyland ticket packages from Costco and he used self checkout. He’d never bought gift cards there before and didn’t realize you have to exchange the cardboard for the actual tickets.
He walked right out with the cardboard, receipt got marked, and nobody stopped him. I was panicking thinking we were out almost $800.
Update though, Costco came through. We went to customer service, they pulled up the receipt, checked the security footage, saw him leave without exchanging the tickets, and fixed it for us. Huge relief.
Really appreciate everyone who reassured me and the Costco employees who helped sort it out.
