Alaska Airlines canceled flights to Nome and Kotzebue on the morning of August 12, 2025 after volcanic ash from an eruption of the Klyuchevskoy volcano on Russia’s Kamchatka Peninsula drifted over the Bering Sea. The Anchorage Volcanic Ash Advisory Center issued a warning affecting airspace between 15,000 and 35,000 feet, as volcanic ash can seriously damage aircraft instruments, windscreens, and engines. Regional carrier Bering Air—though typically flying below 10,000 feet—also canceled numerous flights on Tuesday due to concurrent heavy rain and high winds. Authorities expect the ash plume to linger for at least 18 hours, and they continue to monitor conditions and issue updates.
