My Alaska Airlines account was hacked this morning. I got an alert saying the email and phone number on my account were changed. That wasn’t me. The problem is once the email is changed, password resets only go to the new email, so I was instantly locked out.
Shortly after, I got a notification that one of my summer flights had been cancelled. Turns out the scammer cancelled my ticket, took the credit, and used it to book a completely different flight for the next day under a different name.
After about four hours on hold and being bounced around, Alaska finally figured it out. They cancelled the scammer’s ticket and rebooked my original flight at the price I paid, but I had to push for that.
What’s concerning is how easy this was once the account was accessed. No account PIN, no security questions, no two step verification, no app approval. Support even tried to suggest my email was hacked, despite the fact the scammer had simply replaced my email on the account.
Glad it’s resolved, but the security setup and response time were pretty alarming. If you fly Alaska, keep a close eye on your account and reservations.
