That’s beyond frustrating. Seeing the exact location and still not being able to get anyone to grab it would drive me insane.
Realistically, a private investigator or attorney isn’t going to get airside access to FCO baggage areas. Airports are heavily restricted. Even you flying there probably wouldn’t help unless the bag is officially released and handed to you landside.
If the AirTag hasn’t moved in 5 days, it’s likely sitting in a baggage storage room waiting to be processed or matched to the PIR. The problem is usually backlog and staffing, not that they can’t physically find it.
What I’d focus on:
Keep pushing through the official PIR channel
Escalate through SAS customer relations, not just baggage phone lines
Mention Montreal Convention liability and reimbursement in writing
Provide the AirTag location but understand they often won’t act directly on third party tracking
Flying to Rome yourself would almost certainly end in frustration unless SAS confirms it’s ready for pickup.
It’s crazy that in 2026 we can see our bags within a few feet but still can’t get an airline to walk over and grab it.
