Rented a car in Portugal from one of the big names. Skipped their insurance and used Rentalcars excess insurance through Zurich instead. Not too worried about the actual damage charge since that should be covered, even though €1,800 for one deep scratch is wild.
What really caught my eye is that they recalculated the airport pickup fee after the damage. Originally it was under €10. Now it’s showing as almost €300.
My guess is they’re treating it as a percentage of the total cost including the damage, which feels really shady. That fee has nothing to do with the scratch.
I’ve emailed them a couple times and I’m waiting to hear back, but trying to think ahead. If they refuse to remove it, what’s the best move?
Would this be something to claim through excess insurance since it’s damage related? Or is this more of a credit card dispute situation? Or something else entirely?
Curious if anyone’s dealt with this before.
