I recently flew United and was seated next to two high school students who were trying to connect their AirPods to the seatback entertainment system.
While they were attempting to pair, my iPhone repeatedly started showing Bluetooth pairing requests from their AirPods. I kept declining them, but the prompts kept reappearing multiple times before they eventually managed to get their connection working.
I’m not very familiar with AirPods or Bluetooth pairing in-flight, as I usually use wired headphones. So I’m wondering whether this is a common issue where AirPods accidentally try to connect to nearby passengers’ phones instead of the seatback screen, or if the passengers were doing something incorrectly that caused this.
I’m also curious if there is any way to prevent or block these kinds of unwanted pairing requests from appearing in the first place. I understand it’s not a serious issue since nothing can connect without approval, but it was still annoying to deal with repeatedly during the flight.
Has anyone else experienced this, and is there a better way to avoid it?
