Major US carriers are reporting a 47% increase in passenger disputes over seat reclining in 2023, with Delta and United implementing new seat design modifications to address the issue. American Airlines announced a fleet-wide retrofit of their A320 family aircraft with pre-reclined seats fixed at 3 inches, impacting 737 aircraft by Q2 2024. The move follows industry data showing that seat pitch on domestic flights has decreased from 34 inches to an average of 31 inches since 2000, while passenger load factors have increased to 84.6%. Singapore Airlines' recent introduction of a 'courtesy notification' system, which alerts passengers when the person behind them is using the tray table for dining or laptop work, has reduced seat-related complaints by 32% during its three-month trial.
