This story hit me hard as someone who hikes often: a missing hiker in Italy's Monviso region was finally found thanks to AI. After being lost since September 2024, his body was discovered when rescue teams used artificial intelligence to analyze over 2,600 drone images. Human eyes might’ve taken weeks the AI spotted his helmet in an afternoon.
It’s a sobering reminder of how quickly nature can take over and how technology is changing the search and rescue game. While it's incredible what AI can now do, it also made me rethink how prepared we really are when heading into remote areas.
Do you carry any locator or emergency beacon when you hike in isolated places?
