AA flights with window shades down the whole time, is this normal?

Just did my first flights with American on a London to Auckland round trip and was really surprised by how window blinds were handled. On BA and most European airlines I fly, blinds are always up for takeoff and landing. On these AA flights, most blinds were already closed during boarding and many stayed closed for almost the entire flight.

I always thought the blinds up rule was a safety thing, so it felt a bit odd. Landing in particular felt strange with no visual sense of where we were or when we’d touch down. I was also surprised how many passengers seemed to prefer keeping them shut, especially on arrival when you usually get that first look at a new place.

Is this normal on AA and other US carriers? Genuinely curious how people feel about this and whether it’s just a cultural difference.
