A visit to Spain and the “tipping gets you better service” myth

Currently in Madrid, where tipping isn’t a thing, and had one of the best service experiences I’ve ever had. One older waiter was juggling six tables greeting people with handshakes, joking with regulars, helping elderly folks with chairs and coats, taking orders, bringing food, checking in naturally, running the card reader all with a real smile.

I paid the exact bill and thought he was about to ask for a tip when he asked for “one dollar.” Turns out he just wanted a US bill as a souvenir.

Three-course lunch with wine was €21 in a major capital city, and the service put most tip-dependent places to shame.
