I’m currently sailing on the Norwegian Star, and early this morning, just north of Newfoundland, we were woken by short horn blasts and a Code Oscar announcement the signal that someone has gone overboard. The atmosphere on board instantly shifted. I saw lifeboats being lowered into the cold, gray water, and the ship even turned back briefly before continuing toward Greenland.
We later learned it was a 79-year-old male passenger. Given the frigid 55°F water temperature, survival chances were heartbreakingly slim. Norwegian Cruise Line confirmed the incident and said an investigation is underway. Crew members are still doing their best to keep spirits up, but there’s a quiet heaviness among passengers. It’s a sobering reminder of how quickly things can change at sea.
Have you ever experienced an emergency while cruising?
