As someone who still remembers the toxic derailment in East Palestine, Ohio, this proposed Union Pacific–Norfolk Southern merger gives me chills. Workers and unions are sounding alarms, saying the deal could lead to more layoffs, higher shipping costs, and worse an increased risk of catastrophic train crashes. When you’re merging two giants with already troubling safety records, how can that possibly end well for rail workers or small communities?
What hits hardest is hearing that crew cuts and longer routes could stretch workers dangerously thin. Some are even being asked to work thousands of miles from home. It feels like this merger is more about profits than people. Anyone else worried about what this could mean for rail safety and local economies?
