I just returned from a 6-day trip through Switzerland and wanted to share a quick trip report. It was an incredibly scenic and memorable journey.
Route overview:
Day 1: Flew into Zurich, then took the train to Chur
Day 2: Rode the Glacier Express from Chur to Zermatt
Day 3: Train from Zermatt to Bern, then picked up a car and drove to Interlaken
Day 4: Stayed around Interlaken and nearby mountain areas
Day 5: Dropped the car off in Lucerne
Day 6: Train back to Zurich and flew home
Key takeaways:
After doing the trip, I probably would not rent a car again. We had some issues with pickup (especially at the Bern Sixt location), and the public transport system in Switzerland is so efficient that it makes driving unnecessary, especially around Interlaken and Grindelwald.
Costs and travel notes:
Switzerland is expensive, but there are ways to manage costs. Eating out is the biggest expense, with meals for two often around 90 CHF. However, supermarkets like Coop and Migros offer affordable lunch options for around 5–10 CHF per person. Overall, aside from food and cable cars, prices felt similar to London levels.
City impressions:
Lucerne: Absolutely beautiful
Interlaken / Grindelwald region: Stunning mountain scenery
Bern: Very charming and underrated
Zurich: Nice, but less impressive compared to the other destinations
Overall, an amazing trip with some of the best scenery I’ve ever seen.
