I’ve been traveling full time for over five years now. No real home base, I only go back to the US for legal stuff or the occasional work opportunity that’s worth it.
A couple places I used as longer term bases early on were Oaxaca, Mexico for about a year and a half, and Lima, Peru for around two and a half years. Had a work visa in Peru and used that time to explore a lot of South America, including Colombia, Ecuador (lived there twice for three months), Argentina, and Chile.
Over the years I’ve done things like long road trips through Patagonia, months in the Huaraz region of Peru, time in places like Nuquí in Colombia, Turtuk in India, motorcycling from Hanoi up to the Chinese border and across northern Vietnam, a two month road trip around Taiwan including the interior, and a six week expedition in Nepal with professional mountain athletes.
I’ve also spent time with a lot of indigenous communities along the way, including Zapotec, Quechua, Aymara, Sherpa, Hmong, Tibetan, and others.
Right now I’m in northern Thailand exploring Nan and the surrounding area. Been in Asia since August 2024.
If any of this is helpful for planning, visas, slow travel, or just inspiration, happy to answer questions.
