I’m taking my first solo trip in mid-May after a recent personal disappointment. It’s a bit last-minute, but I already have the time off and want to use it well. I’m planning about 10 days and am torn between Spain and Portugal.
My biggest priority is safety, though from what I’ve read both seem quite safe for solo female travelers. I do feel a stronger cultural pull toward Spain I’m of Sephardic Jewish ancestry and would find it meaningful to visit Jewish quarters and historical sites connected to that history. I also speak a good amount of Spanish, which feels comforting from both a connection and safety perspective.
The kind of trip I’m looking for:
Laid-back and relaxed, not rushed
Amazing food
History, architecture, and some nature
Introverted-friendly (no partying, heavy drinking, or nightlife focus)
Hotels rather than hostels
If I choose Spain, La Alhambra is a must and would be a major highlight.
If I choose Portugal, I’m considering Lisbon, Porto, Sintra, and possibly Braga.
I’m 49 and not too concerned about unwanted attention, but I do want to feel comfortable and at ease traveling alone. For those who’ve done either (or both) solo did you feel noticeably safer or more relaxed in one over the other? Which would you recommend for a first solo trip like this?
