I’ve seen a lot of people saying the new Southwest setup is great because you don’t have to check in right at 24 hours anymore to get a good spot.
I just tried using my 48-hour early seat selection benefit (through a credit card perk) and honestly it felt exactly the same, just shifted earlier.
About 7 hours before the 48-hour mark almost all the extra legroom seats were still open. Then right when the window opened, within about 30 seconds, more than half of them were already gone.
So it still feels like a feeding frenzy. It’s just happening a day earlier and behind a credit card paywall instead of the old early bird / upgraded boarding system.
Not sure this really solves the “no more check-in stress” thing people were hoping for.
