This one hurts.
I booked three Delta tickets from Cartagena back to the US in main cabin classic because it said changes were allowed with a fee plus fare difference. Total was $842 for all three, which felt solid at the time.
Now I want to move the trip up by two weeks on the exact same flight. The new fare is only about $40 more per ticket. Sounds easy, right? Nope. Because it’s South America, the change fee is $330 total, on top of the fare difference.
I booked through Chase Travel using points, so after a long call Chase checked with Delta and basically told me it’s cheaper to just buy brand new tickets than to change the existing ones. Which makes the whole “you can change this ticket” thing feel pretty misleading when the fee alone is almost half the original booking.
Yes, I get it, it’s in the fine print. Still feels awful that a fare advertised as changeable only makes sense if your original ticket cost way more than the fee.
Has anyone ever had Delta waive or reduce this kind of fee, or am I just stuck either eating the cost or forcing a trip I don’t want anymore?
