Wife got bumped because I wasn’t traveling on a companion fare… legit or not?

Booked a round trip SEA to SJC for my wife and me using a companion fare on my account. Paid with my wife’s Alaska credit card. We both have Alaska cards.

I had to leave the country unexpectedly a few days before the trip due to an emergency, so I couldn’t fly. My wife decided to continue anyway. She checked in fine, got a boarding pass, boarded the plane, and even sat in her seat for about five minutes.

Then she was told she had to get off because I wasn’t traveling and that I had to accompany her for the companion fare to be valid.

Trying to understand if this is actually how the rules work or if something went wrong in how it was handled. Getting bumped after already boarding feels pretty extreme.

Edit: Thanks for all the input. After a long hold, an Alaska agent canceled the entire trip and gave us a full refund due to the emergency. My wife rebooked the outbound with miles and will book the return separately.
