Why do I see so many Amish on Amtrak?

Random observation but I’ve noticed this too on certain routes.

A lot of Amish and Mennonite communities don’t drive cars for religious reasons, so trains are one of the easiest ways for them to travel longer distances. Amtrak connects a lot of rural areas in Pennsylvania, Ohio, Indiana, etc., where there are large Amish populations.

So if you’re on routes through those states, especially something like the Keystone, Pennsylvanian, Capitol Limited, or even parts of the Midwest corridors, it’s pretty common.

They also travel for things like markets, visiting family, medical appointments, or community events, and trains are just practical for that.

Totally fair question by the way. It can just be surprising if you’re not used to seeing large Amish communities where you live.
