What Southwest passengers using mobility devices must know Sept. 25

Starting September 25, 2025, Southwest Airlines will require removable lithium batteries used in powered wheelchairs and scooters to be removed before boarding due to fire safety concerns. Additionally, from January 11, 2026, these batteries must not exceed 300 watt-hours. The move comes after an FAA safety alert and multiple reported incidents involving lithium batteries causing smoke, fire, or heat issues onboard flights. Southwest emphasized that while these cases remain rare, proactive safety protocols are critical—especially for passengers with mobility devices.
