Had an interesting delay earlier this week on a CRJ-900 from MSP to PIT. We sat for about an hour because the plane was overweight. Crew tried everything to avoid kicking people off. They even moved bags from the cargo hold to overheads. Eventually they still needed 7 volunteers to take flights the next day.
That’s roughly 10% of the passengers, which seemed extreme. Weather looked fine at both ends and temps didn’t seem unusual for this time of year.
Curious what usually causes this. Is it things like unexpectedly heavy luggage, more long-haul connections with big bags, fuel planning, runway performance, or something else entirely?
