I was looking at airport stats and didn’t expect this at all.
The US has around 15,800 airports. Brazil is second with about 4,900. Then Australia with 2,100, Mexico and Canada around 1,400 each, the UK about 1,000, and Russia roughly 900.
So the US alone has more than those six countries combined. Apparently Texas by itself has more airports than all of Canada.
What surprised me is that only about 500 in the US have scheduled commercial service. The rest are general aviation, private strips, small local fields.
I’m from Brazil so I knew we had a lot, but the gap is huge.
Australia being third is interesting too, especially since Russia is much bigger in land area but has fewer airports.
