Trip delay insurance for a missed connection, does this qualify?

Looking for some advice on how Sapphire Reserve trip delay insurance might handle this.


Our family’s flight into ATL was delayed about an hour, which caused us to miss our connection to SJO. There were no more connections until the next day, which would’ve pushed arrival back by around 14 hours.


Instead of waiting it out, we hired a driver and did a 4 hour drive to reach our final destination the same day.


The policy language says the delay has to be 6 hours, which is where I’m unsure. The initial delay itself was only an hour, but the missed connection would have delayed the trip until the next day.


Has anyone successfully gotten reimbursement in a situation like this? Any tips on how to frame the claim or which parts of the delay to emphasize?
